Surf Cities

About Our Chapter

NCL, Inc., Surf Cities Chapter is a group of mothers and daughters who have come together in a commitment to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.
Members shall reside in San Diego County. Like all NCL, Inc. Chapters, Surf Cities aims to foster the mother-daughter relationship by serving its communities together.

Surf Cities was founded on April 6, 2003 with 31 founding members, and is the 111th NCL, Inc. chapter to form in the United States. We now have more than 130 mother-daughter teams (300 people) serving 28 philanthropies in north San Diego County. On average, our chapter works more than 10,000 volunteer hours each year.

As community leaders, we want to build strong ties with our philanthropy partners and serve their needs. We work hard to make their lives a touch easier and in doing so, they can have a bigger impact on their communities. Our work is fun, rewarding, and makes a big difference.

In addition to philanthropy, our members take part in cultural experiences that encourage social awareness, kindness and integrity. We’ve taken dance, art, self defense, and etiquette classes, visited museums, watched plays and musicals, and have even taken goat yoga! We take pride in planning our annual events — Mother Daughter Tea, Fashion Show, and Senior Recognition — and use them to honor NCL traditions and celebrate our unique group.

Our Leadership Program

Every Surf Cities Ticktocker (NCL term for our daughters) is encouraged to take a position on their grade-level board, giving them an opportunity to run meetings, plan events, express their ideas and concerns, and steer the direction of their class.

Our Patronesses (NCL term for moms) can stretch their wings too. We have a chapter job every year (except your first year in chapter), whether as a philanthropy liaison, part of an event planning team, or a chapter board member.

We are building leaders, both moms and daughters.

Cultural Experiences

We preserve National Charity League traditions and core values, while appreciating the growth that comes from connecting with different communities and cultures. We continually strive to build stronger ties with our communities and the individuals within them. It is through this understanding that we grow and develop broader worldviews that will shape and support our lives.

  • Traditions – We celebrate the richness of our history through traditions that honor the past while serving the future.
  • Values – We embrace values that make us strong as an organization of mother-daughter leaders.
  • Community Connections – We build connections through experiences that impact our communities.
  • Etiquette – We encourage and mentor kind, respectful and gracious social conduct.

NCL chapters throughout the country are intent on embracing long-standing NCL traditions in addition to creating new ones. Surf Cities is no different. Each year, mothers and daughters attend a cultural event as a class with a focus on different areas of art, theatre, dance, music, wellness, and much more.

In addition, we take pride in our annual chapter events, which celebrate our work, growth, and dedication to our community. Our Mother-Daughter Awards Tea is a long-standing NCL tradition that honors our work in the community while also celebrating the etiquette and graciousness of a traditional tea. Our Fashion Show highlights the growth and journey of our 10th grade class, while encouraging the girls’ self confidence and individuality. Senior Recognition celebrates our senior class and the work they’ve done during their six years in NCL.
